Fraud happens each and every day and can happen to anyone, even in North Dakota and Minnesota. Here at FCCU, we want to help educate our members and make sure you are protected.

Scam of the Month: Phishing Texts

FCCU has recently received multiple reports from members who have received fraudulent text messages claiming that their accounts have been “temporarily restricted.” These messages are not from FCCU and are a form of phishing — a malicious tactic used by scammers to trick individuals into revealing sensitive personal or financial information.

What Is a Phishing Text Message?

Phishing texts are deceptive messages sent to your phone that appear to be from legitimate institutions such as banks, government agencies, or even your credit union. These messages often include alarming language like:

  • “Your account has been locked.”
  • “Unusual activity detected. Click here to verify.”
  • “Immediate action required!”

The goal is to pressure you into clicking a link or calling a number that will then prompt you to provide confidential information like your login credentials, Social Security number, or credit card details. In many cases, these links lead to fake websites designed to look nearly identical to a trusted site.

How to Recognize a Phishing Text

  • Generic greetings: Messages that start with “Dear customer” instead of your name, or sometimes don't have a name.
  • Urgent or threatening language: Warnings that your account will be closed or funds frozen unless you act immediately.
  • Suspicious links: URLs that are misspelled, shortened or unfamiliar.
  • Requests for personal info: Legitimate organizations will never ask for passwords, PINs, or Social Security numbers via text.

Important Reminders:

  • Do not click links: Also, don't respond to messages from unknown numbers or suspicious sources.
  • Never share personal information: Your personal information and financial details should never be shared over the phone with an unknown caller.
  • Do NOT call: Phone numbers that pop up on your screen warning you of suspicious activity or claiming you’re in trouble.
  • Monitor your accounts: Regularly check for unauthorized activity and report anything unusual immediately.

Stay alert. Protect yourself. And please share this with friends and family — especially those who may be more vulnerable.
